Obituary of Phyllis M. Martine
Phyllis Carlton Martine, 93, completed her life's journey Monday morning in her Oak Lane residence in Vineland. "Sugg" or "Suggie" as she was known to many was born and raised in Vineland, the daughter of Richard and Elsie (Errickson) Carlton. She graduated Vineland High School in 1949 before marrying her sweetheart, Louis Martine, in 1950. Mrs. Martine dedicated her life and all of her time to her family: She was married for over six decades to Louis before he passed in 2016, raised six children, and doted on her 18 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Martine was known for her mastery in the kitchen. She could cook up or bake anything she set her mind to, and always took requests from her children and grandchildren. She had a green thumb and could make even the most temperamental of plants flourish in her garden. She was an ardent puzzle enthusiast and spent many hours hunched over her table figuring out thousand-piece puzzles. In addition to household passions, Phyllis loved listening to music. It wasn't uncommon to find her watching The Lawrence Welk Show with three or more of her grandchildren at her feet. Her sense of humor was simultaneously irreverent and well-meaning-often resulting in side-splitting laughter for those who understood her sense of humor and looks of bewilderment from those who couldn't believe she just said that. Phyllis was able to make her house into a home and effortlessly made all who entered under her roof feel welcome. She was a devout Catholic and cherished the Mass and listening to gospel music.
Phyllis Martine was a good neighbor to those living on Oak Lane, yes, but also in a broader sense. She cared fiercely about the people in her life-her friends, her family, and those in her community. Over the course of her life, Phyllis has donated to numerous charities and causes out of the goodness of her heart. She lived the 93 years of her life generously, charitably, and always happily. Phyllis's lifelong devotion to her family, her kindness and sweetness to her neighbors, and of course, her ravioli will be missed greatly by those who knew and loved her.
Phyllis is survived by five loving children and their spouses, Thomas's wife Joan Martine of Princeton, Richard Martine (Donna), Peter Martine (Karen), Beth Arkainno, Jack Martine (Sue), and Matthew Martine, all of Vineland. She is survived by eighteen grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents, Richard and Elsie (Errickson) Carlton, Phyllis is predeceased by her husband Louis G. Martine; her eldest son Thomas W. Martine; her son-in-law Jack Arkainno, and eight siblings, George R. Carlton, Rev. Elsie Levari-Scattergood, Dorothy Carlton Neprava, Howard E. Carlton, Richard A. Carlton III, Lawrence Carlton, Raymond Carlton, and Richard A. Carlton IV.
A church visitation will be held on Monday, September 9th from 9:15am to 10:45am followed by a funeral mass at 11am from Divine Mercy Parish, 23 West Chestnut Avenue, Vineland. Entombment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Vineland.
