Obituary of John C Butterfield
John C. Butterfield, 76, of Roadstown (Stow Creek), NJ, passed away on January 12, 2024 after a courageous battle with cancer. His beloved wife Barbara (Lamcken) was by his side as he fought this long hard battle. John was born in Bridgeton to the late Teresa (Cantillon) and Walter S. Butterfield.
His family moved to Deerfield Twp. where he and his three siblings enjoyed playing in the woods and playing with the other kids on the block. The scouts, baseball and piano lessons were some of his favorite childhood memories. In high school he marched in the school band and after graduating Bridgeton High School, John went on to Glassboro College (now Rowan University) where he earned his bachelors degree and began a career in education. While in college he met his future wife. After he finished college and started teaching, he started summer gigs in Wildwood playing saxophone in a band. He spent his first year and many more at the Edgarton Elementary in Newfield and than moved to Cleary in Buena. He was a great teacher and earned the "Teacher of the Year Award". John retired in 2004.
John and Barbara were married in 1973 and settled in Roadstown in a 1780 house. They went to auctions and shops to purchase antiques. They became members of Cumberland County Historical Society and eventually became volunteers. John was a trustee for many years.
Their neighbors in Roadstown were so friendly and helpful. John loved planting vegetable gardens and would share his produce with them. He loved cooking and was really good and creative at it. John and Barbara loved entertaining and would host Christmas parties, barbeques, and crabs on their patio for family, friends and neighbors. In Roadstown, the friendly and helpful neighbors may not be the same people but everyone liked John. He was always smiling and waving and his humor would lift your mood.
They loved traveling together and enjoyed Europe, Canada, The Caribbean Islands, Hawaii and especially on Cape Cod where they went every year for 25 years until John started getting ill. John enjoyed the water and loved boating with friends. He enjoyed canoeing and kayaking and found a group of friends to paddle on the rivers with. He also loved music, it was his passion and he enjoyed many concerts over the years. John found an audio group of music men and enjoyed being a part of that too.
John and Barbara celebrated their 50th Anniversary on June 22. 2023. He was a wonderful husband who will be greatly missed. He was a good brother to Scott Butterfield (Sheree) of West Trenton; sisters Margery Rowe (Brian) of Millville and Teresa Delp (Debora Morgan) of Stow Creek Twp. He was a brother-in-law to Elaine Migliarese (Lou) of Milmay and Ken Lamcken (Annie) of Cedarville. He enjoyed being an uncle to 12 nieces and nephews and their spouses and 14 of their children. He was predeceased by his parents, Walt and Terry; in-laws Hugh and Rita Lamcken; two nieces, Jennifer Smith and Rebecca Butterfield and his sister-in-law Kathy Grayson, as well as cousins, aunts and uncles.
A memorial service will be held at a later time.
