Obituary of Doris Berkowitz

Doris (Finkel) Berkowitz, of Hollywood, FL, previously of Vineland, passed away on June 4,2016. Doris was born in Philadelphia in 1920, and moved to Rainbow Lake, Pittsgrove Township, together with her twin brother, Sam, and parents, Jennie and Harry Finkel. They ran “Finkel’s Farm”, a boarding house known for its nice accommodations and delicious meals. Doris was very proud of both her rural background and Jewish heritage which she enjoyed sharing with other people. She graduated from Vineland High School in 1938 and Glassboro Teachers College. She met her beloved husband, George Berkowitz, when he gave her a ride to the train to get to her college classes. They married in 1946 and had 67 years together. They enjoyed a rich family life and many travel adventures. She showed great interest in people and their backgrounds and histories. Doris was a proud life member and volunteer for Hadassah, and she and George were devoted members of Beth Israel Synagogue and generous supporters of many Jewish causes. She is survived by son, Harry (Debi) Berkowitz, daughter Ryna (David) Alexander, grandchildren Andrea Berkowitz (Jonathan Weinstein), Marissa (Oren) Zarif, Max, Sam and Perry Alexander as well as great-grandchildren Ramona Weinstein, Riley Weinstein and Ethan Zarif. She leaves many nieces, nephews, and cousins, Her husband, George, passed away in January 2014. Funeral services will be conducted by Rabbi Alfredo Winter on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at 2pm from Rone Funeral Service, 1110 East Chestnut Avenue, Vineland. Friends will be received at 1pm. Interment will follow in Alliance Cemetery, Norma.
