Obituary of Ruth Gittone

Ruth Gittone, 102, of Vineland, passed away peacefully at The Bishop McCarthy Residence on October 31, 2013. Married in 1941 to the former Vineland Mayor John C. Gittone, Ruth was the also the niece of former Vineland Mayor Phillip Lirio. The second of four daughters born to Alfred and Stella Lirio of Vineland and Millville, Ruth was second-generation American. Ruth graduated from Vineland High School in 1929. After graduating, everyday she would commute by train to Camden and a ferry across the Delaware River to Taylor Business School in Philadelphia. Ruth was politically minded, having lived through 18 presidencies, from Taft through Obama, Ruth first voted in 1932. She was part of the Cumberland County Women's Republican Club. She hosted a tea for Pat Nixon, the wife of Vice President Candidate Richard Nixon in 1952. In 1953 she joined the NJ Delegation at the Eisenhower/ Nixon inauguration in Washington, DC. Ruth worked as administrative assistant to the head of the Vineland Electric in the 60's. She retired in the 70's and traveled throughout United States and Europe with her sister, Angie Johnstone. She is survived by her daughters, Joanne and Marie Gittone of Vineland; grandsons & their wives, Darren & Juliann Pulvirenti and Craig & Beth Capello; great-grandchildren Francesca and Nolan; several nephews, and her beloved cats, Bella and Nicky. A Funeral Home Visitation will be held on Monday from 1pm to 2:30pm followed by A Funeral Service at 2:30 pm from Rone Funeral Service, 1110 East Chestnut Avenue, Vineland. Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Vineland.
