Obituary of Hilde Joseph

Hilde Joseph, 87 Holocaust Survivor and Artist Hilde (Forst) Joseph, 87, a long-time Vineland resident passed away at her home on Thursday, November 18, 2010 after an extended illness. She was the daughter of the late Erna (Schott) and Sigmund Forst. Born and raised near Worms, Germany, she and her family emigrated to the U.S. in 1937, escaping the Nazi offensive. She married Kurt Joseph, a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army. Following the armistice, they operated a chicken farm on Almond Road, and later a kosher poultry business. Hilde studied art with both local and Philadelphia teachers, becoming adept first at oil painting and eventually her beloved watercolors. As a member of the Bay Gals of South Jersey, she joined with other artists both in landscape and still life pieces and exhibited widely in the South Jersey area winning a number of prizes for her work. She and her late husband were long-standing members of Plum Street Synagogue and later of Sons of Jacob Congregation. She is survived by her daughter Elvera Joseph and her son, Robert Joseph, both of New York. A graveside service and interment will be held Sunday, November 21, 2010, at 11:00 am from Alliance Cemetery, Gershel Avenue, Norma, NJ.
